There are many types of lock nuts. According to the different anti-loosening principles, structural designs and application scenarios, they can be mainly divided into the following categories:
1. Nylon Insert Lock Nuts / Nyloc Nuts
Anti-loosening principle: a nylon ring (PA66) is embedded at the top or bottom of the nut, and the nylon is squeezed to produce friction resistance when the bolt is screwed in, thereby preventing loosening.
Features:
Suitable for vibration environments and can be reused (3-5 times).
Limited temperature resistance (usually -40ºC~+120ºC).
Standards:
DIN 985 / ISO 7040 (general purpose)
DIN 6926 (with flange, as in the question)
ANSI/ASME B18.16.3 (American Standard)
2. All-Metal Lock Nuts
(1) Prevailing Torque Nuts
Anti-loosening principle: The nut thread is partially deformed (such as elliptical, eccentric, slotted, etc.), and the friction is increased through elastic deformation.
Type:
DIN 980 (metal insert lock nut).
ANSI B18.16.4 (American Standard metal lock nut).
(2) Jam Nuts
Anti-loosening principle: Two nuts are tightened against each other to prevent loosening by axial pressure.
Disadvantages: It takes up a lot of space and requires precise torque control.
3. Flange Lock Nuts
Features: Flange increases contact area, disperses pressure, and is combined with a locking structure (such as nylon ring or metal deformation) to prevent loosening.
Standards:
DIN 6926 (nylon lock + flange)
DIN 6921 (metal flange nut, no locking function)
4. Special structure lock nuts
(1) Slotted Nuts (Castle Nuts / Slotted Nuts)
Anti-loosening principle: slotted on the top, mechanically fixed with a split pin.
Application: high vibration occasions (such as car wheels).
Standards: DIN 935 / ANSI B18.2.2
(2) Lock Nuts
Anti-loosening principle: double-sided wedge-shaped gasket structure, self-tightening due to reverse tension generated during vibration.
Advantages: reusable, high temperature resistant.
(3) Serrated Flange Nuts
Anti-loosening principle: The bottom of the flange is serrated, and the bite contact surface is anti-loosening.
Standard: DIN 6927
5. Chemical anti-loosening nuts
Principle: The thread is coated with adhesive (such as anaerobic adhesive), which increases friction after curing.
Type:
Loctite pre-coated nuts (requires specific torque to activate).
Secondary glued nuts (on-site glue application).
6. Other special locking nuts
Keps nuts (K-Lock Nuts): with free-rotating metal washers to simplify assembly (ANSI B18.6.9).
Stover nuts: American standard single-use metal deformation nuts (ANSI B18.2.2).
Aerospace locking nuts: such as MS21240 (all-metal high-temperature type).
